Text Box: The Region: This is an area that offers numerous options for outdoor recreation and accommodations. One option is a 3-5 day flat water canoe trip on the headwaters of the Penobscot from the Lobster Lake area to the south end of Chesuncook Lake. A more adventuresome approach would be an introduction to whitewater canoeing/playboating below Saboomook Dam to Roll Dam. There are opportunities to bushwhack (off trail hike with map and compass) and to backpack on the Appalachian Trail just south of Baxter State Park. Mane’s best whitewater rafting is offered on the West Branch of the Penobscot River as well. You may also want to consider a day-hike up Maine’s highest peak, Mt. Katahdin. We also can arrange for a full day of rock climbing and repelling in this region. While tenting out at primitive camp sites is the most common and the least expensive way to go, you may want to consider using platform tents at a commercial campground for your group for at least part of the outing and just prior to climbing Mt. Kathadin or whitewater rafting. Length: 3-7 days Difficulty: Depending on activities chosen. Safety & Prevention: As with all of our outings, we give very detailed instructions. We teach the basics of canoeing and give clear guidelines for what's expected on the river and around the campsite. We under- stand the great responsibility we have with each member of your group and place a great emphasis on safety, prevention, and the well-being of everyone in your group. Best Time to Go: July & August. We avoid Mt. Katahdin and rafting on weekends. The weather is usually warm, and the bugs are minimal, with the exception of the Lobster Lake Region when a high release is given at Saboomook Dam. This causes a back flood in the region and creates new hatches of mosquitoes!
