Text Box: The 2010 Trip: We first did this trip back in 1998 and have been back five times since. The NE Mistassibi is one of Quebec’s finest back-country whitewater canoeing adventures. The trip involves maneuvering numerous rapids, catching fish for a couple of our meals and learning to start your warming and cooking fire with a spark. We will teach you the necessary skills to travel with confidence in a canoe. Beginning at Lac Machisque, it’s 80 miles to our takeout location. The NE Mistassibi boasts more then 80 sets of rapids (class I-III) and offers excellent fishing for Brook Trout and large Northern Pike. Interested in booking a trip for your group on the NE Mistissibi? Length: 9-10 days; 7 days on the river and 1.5 to 2 days travel from Maine on either end. Note: This trip can be shortened or lengthened by a day with different starting and ending locations. Difficulty: This is a more difficult river than the Bonaventure. The Mistassibi is a solid class II-III river, with only one portage and a couple places to line. Having good basic whitewater paddling skills is required. We are able to take a few beginners when the majority of the group has good whitewater paddling skills. Safety & Prevention: This is another very remote trip with total isolation the first 3-4 days. Later on we encounter dirt roads with some truck traffic as this is a working forest. We carry a satellite phone in case of an emergency. Detailed instructions are given teaching the basics of canoeing and giving clear guidelines for what's expected on the river and around the campsite. We understand the great responsibility we have for the safety of the group and place a great emphasis on safety, prevention and the well being of all group members. Best Time to Go: July, as the weather is usually warm and the bugs are minimal. We’ve done this river in low and high water levels, and it is has been fine at these different levels.
