Text Box: Gear & Clothing

For outings that involve primarily canoeing:

WEATHER & CLOTHING: Maine and Canadian summers are short, so packing for cool weather camping is important. Bring quality rain gear with a hood or hat with brim to shed water. Bring proper cool weather clothing, (cotton when wet stays cold!) Wool, polypropylene and modern synthetic thermal materials when used with an outer shell provide warmth even when wet. Please come prepared.

FOOTWEAR: On canoe trips you will be required to have something on your feet at all times. An old pair of sneakers with good traction work well for swimming, wading ,and canoeing. Be sure sneakers are not too tight as they can cause blisters. Wearing socks with sneakers will help prevent blisters. Synthetic or wool socks provide warmth even when wet. River sandals are not allowed to be worn while traveling by canoe as they provide little protection for your feet and fall off easily while swimming and wading.

PACKING FOR YOUR TRIP: We recommend large river dry bags for packing your personal gear and clothing. Sealine makes a Boundry 115 model, which has shoulder carry straps and a carrying capacity of 6,940 cubic inches. These waterproof bags are made of tough 20 oz. PVC coated fabric and have a fold, roll, and clip system. You will want to organize your clothing in doubled 13 gallon size trash bags for additional waterproofing. When using a non-waterproof duffel bag (nylon or canvas), be sure to double line your bag for waterproofing purposes. Sealine bags are available for rent at a very reasonable cost, or you may want to purchase your own bag and other personal gear from a supply company such as, LL Bean, Campmor , NRS or MTI Adventurewear
