Text Box: The Trip: Located just south of Baxter State Park. The Debsconeag Chain of Lakes are located in the West Branch of the Penobscot Region. This is a beautiful off-the-beaten path region, which includes three portages around class IV rapids on the Penobscot, and two long and one short carry between the Debsconeag Lakes. Upon arriving at 4th Debsconeag, we make the transition from canoe/portaging to backpacking on the Appalachian Trail. This is a section of the trail know as the 100 Mile Wilderness, and noted by many AT through hikers as the most rugged part of the whole AT system. We back pack for 2-3 days back to Abol Bridge, with the option of coming out via a bushwhack on the last day or night! Because this trip takes place in the West Branch of the Penobscot Region, you may want to add a day of whitewater rafting , climbing Mt. Katahdin, or rock climbing before or after the canoeing/hiking part of your trip. For ages 14-up and adults. Maximum group size with our leaders is 12.

**Be sure to read more about “choosing your approach” when considering booking a trip for your group in this region. We recommend the Wilderness Pilgrimage Approach for this outing.

Length: 3–10 days—with several starting and ending options. Six days is recommended when doing the Debsconeag & Appalachian Trail loop. Add additional days for extra activities in the region.

Difficulty: A physically demanding trip with numerous portages. Class II-III whitewater. No previous experience is required.

Safety & Prevention: This is a remote region, and we could be from several hours to a full day getting out for help in the case of an emergency. We give very detailed instructions. We teach the basics of canoeing and give clear guidelines for what's expected on the river and around the campsite. We understand the great responsibility we have with the group, and place a great emphasis on safety, prevention, and the well-being of group members.

Best Time to Go: We offer this trip during July & August when the weather is usually warm and the bugs are minimal.

Ages: Teens 14 & up, Adults

Cost: Starting at $395.00 per person
