Text Box: Choosing Your Approach

Example of effective character development...The character development we see taking place on pilgrimage trips is exciting! For example, we find that the most unlikely leader in a group learns how to be an effective leader, while the strong leader learns how to become a better team player. All participants develop problem-solving skills and learn first hand that a lot of what we have in life are not needs, but wants, without which we can do just fine! Participants also develop numerous outdoor living skills, better coping skills, better self-esteem, teamwork, and experience in setting individual and group goals ( the group covenant). Lessons in trust are learned while rock climbing and rappelling, and whitewater canoeing. GOT FEAR? Imagine the food for discussion during a night hike as your group hikes off- trail with only a flashlight, map, and compass. A day–long solo can be an amazing and highly beneficial time for reflection, reading scripture, setting personal goals, and simply discovering the benefits of being still.

Wilderness pilgrimage...out of your comfort zone.
The pilgrimage approach involves getting out of your comfort zone, working those muscles, and sweating a little bit (sometimes a lot!). The Lord provided numerous “out of your comfort zone” experiences for the purpose of growth for many of His servants. Consider Moses in the wilderness, the life and journeys of Paul, the leadership of Daniel and his uncompromising stand during adversity, the trials of Job, and numerous others with whom God used wilderness experiences for the purpose of growth, and ultimately to bring glory to the Father.

The pilgrimage approach is an excellent tool for ministry, but it is not for everyone. Being in good physical condition is important, but you don’t need to be an athlete to attend. Students that are overweight, inactive, or have physical limitations should not attend. Please contact us to discuss concerns you may have for yourself or your group members. Please note, while wilderness pilgrimages tend to be physically demanding, the physical part of the program is only one aspect that makes it an effective tool for ministry.

The average age for a teen group should be 15-16 years old or older. Only a few should be in the 13-14 age range. Total group size should be no more than 12. A group of 6 is fine. Choose the adventuresome approach for middle school groups. These trips are less demanding physically. If you choose, we can implement some of the pilgrimage philosophy we use with older groups such as leadership, development, teamwork, etc. Duration, Plan on at least 5 days when choosing the pilgrimage approach, shorter trips, 2-4 days in duration, are too short for using the pilgrimage approach and do not allow adequate time to be affective with this approach.
