Text Box: The Trip: One of eastern Canada’s favorite rivers! We first did the Bonaventure back in 1995, and what a river it is! With mostly all quick water, from its head waters at Lac Bonaventure, all the way to the Bay of Chaleurs. The Bonaventure, with its pristine, clear, cold water, and breath taking mountain vista, is a classic spring runoff trip.

Length: 85 miles—Lac Bonaventure to the Bay of Chaleurs. We spend 5-6 days on the river, and a day on both ends for travel to and from Maine.

Difficulty: A class II-III river. The first couple of days start out as a small, swift mountain stream with tight turns—avoiding river wide blow downs (strainers) and some Class II-III drops, takes careful skill. After the 2nd day, the river widens out and offers mile after mile of quick water and class II rapids. Upon entering the canyon on day 4 or 5, there are numerous class III rapids and ledge drops. Having good basic whitewater paddling skills is a must for this trip. There are very few portages and only a few places we need to line canoes.

Safety & Prevention: This is a very remote river, especially the first few days. In the case of an emergency, getting help would be very difficult. During the latter part of the trip, we encounter camps, dirt roads, and an occasional Atlantic Salmon fishermen. We give very detailed instructions. We teach the basics of canoeing, and give clear guidelines for what's expected on the river and around the campsite. We understand the great responsibility we have for each member of the group and place a great emphasis on safety, prevention, and the well-being of all group members.

Best Time to Go: Mid-June, while the water is up and the bugs are still minimal. It can be quite a cold trip. If we go too early the water can be too high and many of the river-wide strainers have not been cleared, adding to the danger of this outing. Later on the water level can be too low.
